What Does an Online Session Look Like?
Online sessions are designed to be structured, interactive, and highly personalised, allowing students to receive targeted learning support from the comfort of home.
Sessions are conducted live using Google Meet and shared learning resources through Google Docs.
Students are actively engaged throughout the session using collaborative documents, live teacher feedback, guided practice, and interactive learning activities. Here is an example of a typical session.
Before the Session
Prior to the session, families will receive:
A Google Meet session link
Any required resources or documents
Reminders of session times where applicable
Students should:
Log into their Google account before the session begins
Ensure their device is charged
Have a stable internet connection
Be seated in a quiet learning space
It is recommended that students use:
A laptop or desktop computer
Headphones where possible
A keyboard for writing tasks
Phones are not suitable for sessions due to the reading and writing components involved.
Joining the Session
At the scheduled session time, students:
Click the provided Google Meet link
Join the live session using their microphone and camera
Open any shared Google Docs or learning resources
For younger students, parent assistance may occasionally be needed at the beginning of sessions to help with logging in or opening documents.
During the Session
Explicit Teaching (10 minutes)
One targeted skill using modelling, visual examples, and guided explanation.Examples may include:
Structuring a paragraph
Improving sentence fluency
Decoding unfamiliar words
Answering comprehension questions
Planning persuasive writing
During this stage, the teacher may:
Share their screen
Type examples live
Annotate texts
Highlight key features within Google Docs
Model writing step-by-step
This allows students to clearly see the thinking process behind the skill being taught.
Guided Practice (15 minutes)
Students practise the skill alongside teacher support using shared digital documents.
The teacher can:
Watch students type in real time
Provide immediate feedback
Leave comments and prompts
Correct misconceptions as they occur
Scaffold responses where needed
This collaborative approach allows sessions to feel highly interactive and personalised.
Independent Application (10 minutes)
Students then independently apply the skill with reduced support.
Tasks may include:
Writing a paragraph
Editing sentences
Completing comprehension responses
Reading and analysing a text
Applying spelling or grammar rules
The teacher continues monitoring progress and provides support when needed.
Feedback & Goal Setting (10 minutes)
At the end of the session, students receive:
Positive feedback
Discussion of strengths
One clear improvement focus
A goal for the following session
Parents may also receive a brief progress update outlining:
What was covered
Areas of improvement
Next learning focus
A Structured, Personalised Approach
Every session is tailored to the student’s:
Current learning level
Individual goals
Strengths and challenges
Pace of progress
By combining explicit teaching, collaborative digital tools, and ongoing feedback, online sessions provide purposeful, engaging support designed to build both confidence and academic growth.
